Lawson Fairbank, 15th March 2007
Surrey Residents have launched a "HANDS off our back gardens" campaign which will take to Epsom High Street on Saturday and Sunday when people will be invited to sign a petition to protect back gardens.
The campaign is to fighting against Government planning rules which classify back gardens as brownfield land. Such land is given a greater priority for development and has seen a rapid increase of infill development, where new homes are built on gardens.
Chairman of the Epsom and Ewell Liberal Democrats, Tim Murphy said: "This is hitting really hard in Epsom at the moment with several planning applications around which involve back gardens."
The campaign is in support of the Liberal Democrats' Private Members' Bill in Parliament which would change the law to protect back gardens and parkland.
